Strikingly Familiar Read

In Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, we are introduced to Percy Jackson. Aside from being dylexsic and ADHD, he is pretty much an average 12 year old. Or, so he thought.

I wonder if Rick Riordan had Harry Potter as his muse as he wrote this. Our hero always gets into trouble, most of the time it is not his fault. There are always something strange happening that lands him in hot soup. He finds out that he is half blood, and is The One when he is sent to a special camp for others like him. There’s evil forces sent out to kill him but cannot penetrate into the camp. His two best friends is a guy and a girl. Oh yeah, not forgetting, there is magic involved. I kept closing the book to look at the cover just to make sure I wasn’t reading Harry Potter and the Olympians.

Is it my imagination or did Rick Riordan got inspired to write this book after Harry Potter? If you can overlook the similarities, it can make for an engaging read. Perhaps this might just be the next big hit after HP. You be the judge. Here is a brief excerpt from the book.

Mrs Dodds stood with her arms crossed in front of a big marble frieze of the Greek Gods. She was making this weird noise in her throat, like growling.

Even without the noise I would’ve been nervous. It’s weird being alone with a teacher, especially Mrs Dodds. Something about the way she looked at the frieze, as if she wanted to pulverize it…

“We’re not fools Percy Jackson,” Mrs Dodds said. “It was only a matter of time before we found you out. Confess, and you will suffer less pain.”

I didn’t know what she was talking about.

Then the weirdest thing happened. Her eyes began to glow like barbeque coals. Her fingers stretched, turning into talons. Her jacket melted into large, leathery wings. She wasn’t human. She was a shrivelled hag with bat wings and claws and a mouth full of yellow fangs, and she was about to slice me to ribbons.

Paradise Lost

Imagine if Tom Clancy, Michael Crichton or John Grisham were a vet. They would probably have written this novel.

The synopsis alone screams ‘option my movie rights’. It’s about a vet who discovers some strange, highly-intelligent mutated animals — parrots without feathers, jaguars that are really saber-toothed tigers, etc.

Cue frantic digging into the mysteries behind these animals and human genetic experimentation framed with some religious references to make it Dan Brown AND Crichton.

The man-playing-God angle is rather fitting, though, and it must be said that as far as thriller novelists go, Rollins is not bad. He knows his pacing.

He has done some research into fractal science and genetic engineering and — being a former vet himself — knows the world of animals well.

Set in the now-trendy New Orleans with references to Iraq and other ‘relevant’ places, this is actually not a bad novel, like how The Mentalist is not a bad show. It’s no Lost or Glee, but it gets the job done.

If you want a bio-engineering thriller written by a vet, this is your book.
