The third Perdana Leadership Foundation Essay Competition, held bi-ennially since 2006, is back with the theme “Malaysia in a Globalised World”. All young Malaysians between the age of 18 and 25 are invited to contribute their thoughts to the questions posed.
“We want to hear the voices of young Malaysians in response to major issues that the country is facing in its bid to remain relevant internationally. We emphasize research through this competition to encourage Malaysian youth to delve deeper into the subjects before presenting their opinions. We hope that via this competition, we will get to know the youth of Malaysia better, promote critical thinking, and reward good writing,” said Tan Sri Nik Mohamed Nik Yaacob, Executive Director of the Perdana Leadership Foundation, at the launch of the Essay Contest today at MPH 1Utama.
Also at the launch was Dato’ Ng Tieh Chuan, Chief Executive Officer of MPH Group, who said, “MPH and PLF have been working together for the past few years and when approached with this idea, we were more than happy to lend our support since it goes in-line with one of our core objectives of promoting literature among Malaysians. Whilst writing competitions are nothing new, we echo Tan Sri’s thoughts – this is a relevant topic that will challenge our youth on a subject that the country is facing. We hope the competition will unearth a new pool of local talents and to help spread the word, we are publicizing this competition through our social media network as well as through our outlets.”
All entries undergo a rigorous shortlisting and selection process, with the shortlisted entries to be evaluated by three judges on the Grand Panel: Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Khoo Kay Kim (Chief Judge), Tan Sri Hashim Makaruddin, and Ms Hardev Kaur.
This year’s competition offers a large cash prize of RM7,000 for the Grand Prize winner, along with a Netbook, an E-Reader as well as MPH book vouchers. The Grand Prize winner’s college or university will also be rewarded with a computer workstation and RM500 worth of books from MPH, as will the institution that sends in the most number of entries. Grand prize winners who don’t belong to any college or university are welcome to name a college or university of their choice to receive the computer workstation. The contest runs from now until 30th September 2010.
For this year’s competition, entries can be submitted via the official website (www.PerdanaEssayCompetition.com.my), by post, or via the dropboxes available at all MPH outlets. The form can also be downloaded here. Essays can be in Bahasa Malaysia or English with English the preferred language, with each essay not exceeding 2,000 words in length on any of the topics below:
