Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi remain a constant source of fascination to us. So much so that every year the reading public is inundated with biography after biography of these two men. With each one promising new insight and even deeper understanding. They range from the almost genius (see Martin Meredith’s Mandela) to the downright controversial (see Jad Adams’ Gandhi: Naked Ambition). And why not? They are, after all, two of the most intriguing leaders the world has ever seen. For throughout their political lives, they managed to skirt that fine line, of being able to compromise without sacrificing their fundamental principles.
