The book’s here, Max, moves with his family to a house by the seaside. In between getting off the train and arriving at the new home, his sister picks up a stray cat and there is something sinister about it. Later, from the bedroom window, Max sees an enclosed graveyard with life-sized figures. Intrigued, he goes to investigate. The central figure is a clown and as Max turns away, he is sure the figure moved and changed its position.
